MICRONEEDLING

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy (CIT for short) is a treatment that has two essential benefits. The main principle of this technique is to safely injure the epidermis with tiny sterile surgical-grade needles, which is followed by a cascade of healing that happens by activating the body’s inflammatory process. By creating micro-injuries to the surface of the skin, normally scars, the body’s natural response is to produce collagen, elastin and growth factors. By doing so, the body starts to heal itself and can significantly improve the skin’s health. The needles also break down the old hardened scar strands and allow these scars to revascularize, softening their appearance.

Another benefit of microneedling is that it allows for the use of certain products to penetrate easily into the dermis, bypassing the skin’s first layer. The body’s channels momentarily stay open during a microneedling treatment, so during this time, whatever product is applied to the skin is significantly more absorbed than if it was with intact skin. For example, it is with this transdermal delivery of products that we can achieve significant results in hair loss by applying minoxidil to open channels of scalp and stretchmark revisions, by the application skin-healing products to open channels.

TYPES OF SKIN ISSUES THAT MICRONEEDLING CAN TREAT:

SKIN REJUVENATION

Microneedling reorganizes old collagen fibers and lays down new collagen and elastin to the foundation of the skin, which leads to skin tightening. This in return significantly reduces the appearance of skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles.

ACNE SCARS

Acne scars may be tiny atrophic (indented) marks throughout the surface of the face. By targeting each individual scar, we are able to stimulate collagen in localized areas to heal these scars, making them softer and more even in appearance.

BURN SCARS, SURGICAL SCARS & OTHERS

Many different types of scars exist. Some are hypertrophic (elevated), atrophic (indented), keloid (elevated and going beyond the injury site) and contracture scars (usually contracted tight burn scars). The mechanism of action to help heal the foundation of these scars is the same. The micro-needles break down the old hardened scar strands and allow these scars to revascularize, relaxing them and softening their appearance.

The number of microneedling sessions required to treat scars is case-specific. Normally, significant results may be achieved after 3-6 treatments. Healing time between each session may be every 4-12 weeks or even longer, depending on how your skin heals. Patience and proper aftercare is key when it comes to achieving the best results.

Please note that scars need to be healed prior to treatment.

STRETCHMARKS

Stretchmarks (striae) are indented streaks that appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks or other places on the body. They are a type of scar that develop with an abrupt stretching or shrinking of the skin. This commonly happens with rapid weight loss or weight gain, rapid muscle growth and pregnancy. Stretchmarks are normally hereditary, so if your family is prone to having them, you most likely are as well. This fast change in the stretching of the skin causes the collagen and elastin of our skin to rupture. As the skin tries to heal following this tear, stretchmarks may appear.

Another option for treating stretchmarks is the new inkless technique.

INKLESS STRETCHMARK REVISION VIA TRANSDERMAL DELIVERY

Inkless stretchmark revision is a technique that is similar to microneedling, but has the ability to offer much more significant results than traditional microneedling through transdermal delivery. Although the idea behind Inkless is quite similar to microneedling, it is much more powerful and efficient than the latter. The differences are the following:

A different machine is used with different needles configurations that are followed by the application of a natural serum into the dermis where the skin is compromised (in this case with stretchmarks). The inkless method is much more specific than microneedling, targeting each individual stretchmark and applying a healing serum straight into each striae. With proper aftercare, we often can achieve significant results after 1 or 2 treatments or sometimes more depending on how you heal. The goal with this technique is to improve the texture of the skin. Totally eliminating stretchmarks is not possible; we are looking to improve, not erase.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR INKLESS STRETCHMARK REVISION?

Anybody with healed stretchmarks! How can you know if your stretchmarks are healed? When they are white of silver in color. Any red or purple/blue marks usually signify that they are still healing and cannot be treated.
