3D AREOLA RESTORATION
WHAT IS 3D AREOLA RESTORATION?
AND WHO IS IT FOR?
MASTECTOMY TATTOOS (POST- BREAST CANCER)

For a unilateral nipple and areola complex, the tattoo is created to match the existing areola as much as possible, keeping the same shape, size and color. For bilateral areolas, we can recreate a look from memory or photograph, or perhaps you may wish to try something a little different. When it comes to creating a natural-looking nipple and areola complex for breast cancer warriors, you are the captain steering the ship. We will always decide on colour, shape and size together and no decision will be taken without your approval. We can even add Montgomery glands, those tiny little white bumps on the areola, to create more dimension.
Some women who have undergone a mastectomy and breast reconstruction also get a nipple reconstruction following their initial surgery. This procedure creates a projection to the breast, similar to a real nipple. Some women opt out of getting their nipple reconstructed and decide on only getting a tattoo instead. It is also possible to have a restorative tattoo on a reconstructed nipple, creating beautiful natural-looking results. You may get a tattoo between 4 to 6 months after nipple reconstruction surgery, sometimes longer. Your scars must not be red to have optimal results and to prevent any complications or infection.

Areola and nipple restoration is also common in individuals who have breast reduction/breast lift scars, individuals who have undergone gender affirmation surgery, gynecomastia surgery and it is also done to re-pigment a pale areola to give it a bit of more color. The case of color loss can result from surgery or even after breast feeding. It is also possible to neutralize and lighten the color of a deeper color toned areola as well.

COSMETIC AREOLA RESTORATION TATTOO POST BREAST AUGMENTATION/ LIFT/ REDUCTION/ EXPLANT/ GENDER TOP AFFIRMATION SURGERY

For anyone who has received any type of breast augmentation surgery such as implants, explants, reductions/lifts as well as gender top-affirmation surgery. Often times this procedure requires a combination of areola pigments and skin tone pigments to help improve the appearance of surgical scars. This tattoo technique is intended to conceal the color of scars around the areaola and on the breast to mimic the color of the natural features with tattoo pigment.
You can expect a minimum of 2 procedures up to 6 procedures per area depending on the severity of the scar. Each procedure can be completed with 8-12 weeks between sessions to promote optimized healing.
Mastectomy Tattoo Client Prerequisites:
1) Must not have any additional breast and/or nipple reconstruction surgeries planned.
Future plans for fat grafting on a grander scale may also contribute to symmetry and placement issues if the tattoos are received prior to assessment by their surgeon.
2) Must be healed from most recent surgery at least 9 months prior to receiving an areola/nipple tattoo. Scars should appear softer and less red/purple or dark in color.

Compromised skin tissue post-reconstruction, chemo and radiation therapy can take some time to heal. Although the minimum can be as soon as 6 months in some cases, more likely if the patient did not undergo chemo/radiation therapy or have multiple surgeries to create nipple grafts/mounds, other clients may need up to a year or more to fully heal. Patients should no longer feel any concerning discomfort such as tenderness, itchiness or peeling.
3) May not currently be under physicians care for active treatment of any kind. Must provide medical clearance from a physician if mastectomy was performed within 18 months.
It is important that medical clearance is provided from the patient's medical physician.
* Paying clients may want to contact their doctor for a referral to ‘deem the tattoo medically necessary’ if in the case they would like to pursue retroactive reimbursement from their health insurance provider.
4) Must plan to attend both the initial and touch up session 8 weeks between both appointments. An initial consultation will be required.
Aside from the preliminary consultation, it is necessary to have 2 appointments, each lasting about 2 hours at most to safely and effectively create the 3D illusion. The tattoo for each appointment will take much less time on the actual skin. The timing is mostly to ensure the satisfaction of the patient’s decision of color, placement and sizing.
NECROSIs
After surgery, a rare but possible complication is necrosis. When the tissue doesn't get enough blood flow, some of it can die. This tissue breakdown is called “necrosis”. Tissue necrosis usually has a marbled look to it and is very hard to the touch. It is very difficult and risky to implant any colour into necrotic or heavily scarred tissue, as any intervention has the possibility of worsening the skin’s condition. Client expectations are very important to manage, as every individual’s skin is different. Your artist should be honest with you and do his/her absolute best to provide optimal results.
TOUCH-UPS
Areola and nipple restoration requires a touch-up appointment 8 -12 weeks after initial session which is included in the price. The ink implanted into the dermis is permanent and made to last as well as stay true to colour. Depending on metabolism, life habits (smoking, drinking, sunbathing), you may want to have a touch-up many years down the line to keep colors looking fresh and bright, but your tattoo is similar to a regular body tattoo and is made to last.
